Crepidula badisparsa sp. nov. (Gastropoda: Calyptraeidae) from Bocas Del Toro Province, Panama
نویسنده
چکیده
—The taxonomy of calyptraeid gastropods is made difficult by their morphologically simple, plastic shells and the numerous instances of morphological convergence within the family. The small speckled species of Crepidula from the West Atlantic have all previously been referred to as C. convexa Say, 1822. Recent developmental and genetic work has shown that there are two species along the coast of North America, C. convexa and C. ustulatulina, and that there are at least two other species in the southern Caribbean. Here I describe, Crepidula badisparsa sp. nov., the small speckled species from the Caribbean coast of Panama and augment the original description of C. navicula from Venezeula and the Lesser Antillies. These species are easily distinguished from the more northern C. convexa and C. ustulatulina by the absence of the right muscle scar, and from each other by genetic, conchological, and anatomical characters.

Development of Cerithiopsis gemmulosum (Gastropoda: Cerithiopsidae) from Bocas del Toro, Panama
—The relationships between the seven families in the Ptenoglossa and the relationships between the Ptenoglossa and other gastropod groups have been based on anatomical features associated with feeding, and on developmental characters. However the embryonic development of several of these families remains undescribed. Here I describe the development of Cerithiopsis gemmulosum from Bocas del Toro...

Calyptraeotheres camposi sp. nov. is described from the Gulf of California, Mexico. The new species is close to C. granti (Glassell, 1933) and C. pepeluisi Campos & Hernández-Ávila, 2010 from the Mexican Pacific and to C. hernandezi Hernández-Ávila & Campos 2006 from the Western Atlantic. These four species feature a third maxilliped with a 2-segmented endopod palp and the exopod with unsegment...
متن کاملCytochrome b and Island speciation of the Genus Astatheros, a phylogentic study from Bocas del Toro, Panama
Two cichlid populations each found on separate islands in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, Panama were identified as members the genus Astatheros. DNA from each population was isolated and purified and the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b was used as a molecular marker. Resulting sequences were compared with already published cytochrome b sequences of Astatheros from an internet database. Phyloge...
متن کاملHigh genetic structure and low mitochondrial diversity in bottlenose dolphins of the Archipelago of Bocas del Toro, Panama: A population at risk?
The current conservation status of the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) under the IUCN is 'least concern'. However, in the Caribbean, small and localized populations of the 'inshore form' may be at higher risk of extinction than the 'worldwide distributed form' due to a combination of factors including small population size, high site fidelity, genetic isolation, and range overlap with h...
